Augusta, South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, addressed to Lieut. Henry L. Howison, executive officer, requesting that he lead an expedition to capture and destroy Confederate schooners operating along the southeastern coast; ALS (1862 August 2; Newport, R.I.) from Samuel Blatchford to Clarence A. Seward relating chiefly to the progress of the Civil War; and order (1864 August 14; New Orleans, La.) of Maj. Gen. Edward Richard Sprigg Canby concerning delivery of Confederate prisoners of war on board the U.S.S. Bienville and U.S.S. Tennessee, side-wheel steamers.

Canby was born in Piatt's Landing, Kentucky, to Israel T. and Elizabeth (Piatt) Canby. He attended Wabash College, but transferred to the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1839. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry and served as the regimental adjutant.
